Church Organizational Structure

December 5, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have noticed a number of hits on the Church Organizational Structure Series. I thought I would post this question to see what the next topic should be. Since this is something you have questions about, let’s talk it through. So, please be sure to comment back with your specific questions and we will start tackling this fun subject!

What are the most confusing or most challenging issues you face with your current organizational structure?

What are some general questions you have regarding job descriptions and roles?

What are your other questions?

Be sure to comment this blog with all questions.  We will take them one by one.

Hi Trent – It is good to drop by your blog. It is funny because my Pastor and I were just discussing these same topics today. Job descriptions with appropriate roles and responsibilities is one thing that to my experience most churches do not have. These should exist even for some key volunteer roles. Having them would avoid much confusion, headache and heartache. We are in the process of putting these together for our church… not necessarily a fun process but we believe will help us out enormously as well as allow us to be more effective in ministry.

I’ve touched on this in my book Writing & Performing Christian Music: God’s Plan and Purpose For The Church. What I wrote (FWIW), is that the problem we run into today is that God has already given the ekklesia an organizational model including job descriptions. The problem I find, is that rather than work God’s model, we’ve created through theology a different model that’s not proving to be effective. I would suggest a strong title for reading is UnChristian from the Barna Group. My spirit was so distressed reading it I can’t get beyond page 72.

There is too much of the “body politic”, in church circles today. There is also a competitiveness that is unbiblical. God has set in the church certain ministries and there can be found, in the life of Christ on earth, examples of how they should function. We look everywhere else but to Him for the examples and wonder why we have problems. Selah
